Student Assessments
In my online Anatomy and Physiology courses, discussion boards provide space for students to exchange ideas and relate biological concepts to their own lives. This approach deepens understanding and motivates students to see the relevance of science in everyday life.
The following examples showcase a discussion prompt asking students to “bust the myth,” about working out while studying the Muscular System Module. The prompt requires the students to analyze information critically rather than just memorize it and encourages students to distinguish scientific facts about muscle tissue, fiber types, and recovery from popular misconceptions or misleading advice. By using only peer-reviewed sources, students strengthen their ability to evaluate claims they might encounter in real life, which is crucial as future healthcare professionals.
The following is a student response to the prompt:
Students are also required to respond to peers to encourage collaboration in an online environment.
Below is a response to Student B's initial post:
This discussion activity fostered student engagement and collaboration. Through this exchange, students benefited by reinforcing their conceptual knowledge, developing critical thinking skills, and practicing effective communication. The collaborative activity also promoted a supportive learning environment where students engaged with course content and with one another, enhancing both comprehension and retention.
When providing feedback, I aim to balance professionalism with a conversational tone that makes students feel supported and encouraged. My goal is to create a dialogue rather than a one-way exchange, helping students reflect on their progress and apply feedback in meaningful ways. By maintaining a respectful and approachable communication style, I foster an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, exploring complex concepts, and taking an active role in their learning.
Below are some examples provided to students for the "Bust the myth" discussion post.
